The amount of times I’ve been asked this is simply insane, and to be fair, it’s a very valid question to ask. Is a Udemy course actually worth the money?
Usually, yes. You can get a lot of Udemy courses for free, and I mean the great Udemy courses.
But the majority of them actually cost some money, and the question that arises here is whether Udemy courses are actually worth their price or not.
Believe it or not, I’m going to answer this question not just as a Udemy instructor but as a Udemy user as well. Whether my fellow Udemy instructors will love it or hate it, I’m going to have to be honest here. So let’s get started.
Udemy Courses Worth It?
For those seeking a straightforward answer and who don’t want to waste their time (which I myself don’t want to waste), I’ll give you a very straightforward answer.
Overall, yes, Udemy courses are actually worth paying for, but not at their full price, well, at least usually not. Udemy is full of great, amazing, and fantastic courses that are worth every single penny you’ll pay for them. They cover nearly any topic you can think of, any niche, anything you might want to learn.
There’s almost a 100% chance that there’s a Udemy course for it. If not, it might be the first, and that’s simply amazing.
But what a lot of people fail to realize is how Udemy operates as a business to give you as much value as possible for as little money as you can spend. Udemy knows that not all of their courses are actually worth $50, $100, or $200 that some instructors are asking for.
They also understand that some courses are worth far more than that. However, students cannot know that until they take the course. To address this, and to thrive as a business, Udemy has created a clever system based on sales and refunds.
Many people are unaware that Udemy runs sales at least twice every single month. So, if you go to Udemy and see a course listed at the full price, there’s a very high chance that in the next few days, there will be a sale, and the course price will be discounted.
There are only very rare scenarios when instructors opt out of this feature. Typically, at least twice a month, Udemy runs sales where course prices are almost always less than $20, and in many cases, they can be even less than $10. Yes, it doesn’t matter how long the course is; every single course can be less than $10 and practically guaranteed less than $20.
So, that means you can actually get the majority of the courses, the absolute majority of courses, if not all the courses you want for a very low price. But even if that’s not enough for you, Udemy has actually done something even better. They’ve made the purchase decision even simpler.
Udemy Can Refund You?
You see, when you pay for a Udemy course, you actually don’t lose anything. You know why? Because for every course, you have a 30-day money-back guarantee.
That means no matter what happens, whether you didn’t like the course, the instructor, the quality of the course, or for any reason you can come up with, you can just ask for a refund. Yes, within 30 days, you can ask for your money back, and Udemy will give you the money with no questions asked. This makes the course purchase practically a no-brainer.
Did you realize that I didn’t talk about actually taking the course? It doesn’t really matter whether you took one minute of the course or the entirety of the course; Udemy will still refund you your money if you want it.
Don’t get me wrong; this doesn’t mean you can get any course for free. If Udemy sees that you’re abusing the system, they will block you, and you’ll lose access to all of your courses instantly. You’ll be IP banned, and you’ll be payment banned. It’s going to be awful for you, so just don’t abuse this system because Udemy is actually paying very close attention to that.
But if you have a valid reason to refund, Udemy will not ask you any questions. Plus, in addition to all that, no instructor on Udemy has its own interest in making a bad course. No one really wants that.
Yes, some courses on Udemy are not the highest quality, but not for a lack of trying. So I, as an instructor, can safely say that we really don’t want our courses refunded, so we try to make courses as best as we can. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don’t, but we at least try.
Overall, summing everything up, you really have nothing to lose when buying Udemy courses. If you want knowledge and don’t care about certificates (because certificates do not matter for Udemy), you simply have nothing to lose with Udemy courses.
First, you are buying them dirt cheap, getting courses with a few hours, or even a few dozen hours for as little as $10 is dirt cheap. Of course, if the information there is what you need.
Even if that’s not enough for you, and if you didn’t like the course, you can refund it within 30 days, no matter whether you took the course or not. Overall, you really have nothing to lose, which makes Udemy courses absolutely worth buying.
I didn’t talk about the quality of the courses, I didn’t talk about the quality of information because it’s all up to you to decide whether the course was quality or not. It varies from case to case.
With this info in mind, you can just go and buy the courses and decide for yourself whether it was worth it or not, information-wise. Just refund it if you didn’t like it.
Overall, yes, it’s worth buying Udemy courses because Udemy has made it incredibly easy and a great deal to do so.
